Background: The Hilltop Institute at UMBC conducts research and evaluate health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations with a team of clinicians, attorneys, social scientists, and programmers. Hilltop institute performs health system research such as aging services, public health, Medicare, behavioral health, oral health research on behalf of local and government agencies, organizations, and foundations.

Background: A major characteristic of smart environments is the increasing amount of smart devices and their complexity. Due the weaknesses of existing user interfaces, when interacting with Smart Environments, users are overloaded because of the multitude of networked appliances and their increasing functional complexity.
Our Project: In this project, we designed and implemented a new 3D-based user interface (based on our proposed interaction model) for interacting with Smart Environments. We further evaluated the 3D UI through user experience studies, and we showed that our designed UI is usable and easy to learn.

3D UI for Interaction with Smart Environments
My Involvement
-
I joined the project when a draft of UI had already been developed. I conducted a mixed-method study, and I recruited 16 participants to use our proposed 3D UI. I investigated the usability of the 3D UI. Through analysis, I showed it was easy to learn and easy to control for users
-
I handled all the data collection and data analysis.
Types of data I collected and analyzed
video, audio, observation notes, subjective questionnaires, interviews.
Methods I used
Mixed methodology (i.e. quantitative and qualitative), statistical tests, open coding, axial coding.
Research Areas
Ubiquitous Computing; Human Computer Interaction; UI Design; Multimedia Systems.
